My mom (foster mom, Leslie Faires), came to visit us this past week. We had a great time with her while she was here!! One of the first things we did was take a tour of Welfare Square in Salt Lake City. My mom has been serving for our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, as a local service missionary in the Colorado Springs Bishop's Storehouse. A Bishop's Storehouse is "a commodity resource center that is used by bishops of the church to provide goods to needy individuals. The storehouses stock basic foods and essential household items." Welfare Square is "a modern facility comprised of a towering, 178-foot-tall grain elevator, a large storehouse, a bakery, a cannery, a milk processing operation, a thrift store, and an employment center—all designed to help people help themselves." Since serving her mission, my mom has been very anxious to see Welfare Square, so we just had to go. It was a really amazing place! Can you believe that the grainery was built in just 8 days??!!!
This is where they process the milk. We got to sample some of the chocolate milk after the tour. It was OK, but not as good as Shumway Dairy's chocolate milk!
Here is where they make cheese. The cheese we got to sample was delicious!!!
